What is CRC32?
CRC32 (Cyclic Redundancy Check, 32-bit) is a checksum used to detect accidental changes to data. It is fast and common in file formats like ZIP and PNG and in network protocols. It confirms data wasn't corrupted in transit — but it is not a security hash.
Example
The CRC32 of hello is 3610a686 in hex (907060870 in decimal).
CRC32 vs. cryptographic hashes
- CRC32 catches random errors but is easy to forge deliberately — never use it for security or passwords.
- For integrity against tampering, use SHA-256.
