What this tool does
This converter translates a data size into all common units at once — bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. It supports both the binary convention (1 KB = 1024 bytes, used by operating systems) and the decimal convention (1 KB = 1000 bytes, used on storage packaging).
Binary vs. decimal
- Binary — 1 KB = 1024 bytes. This is why a “500 GB” drive shows as ~465 GB in your OS.
- Decimal — 1 KB = 1000 bytes. Used by drive manufacturers (technically KiB/MiB is the precise binary notation).
Example
1 MB in binary = 1,048,576 bytes = 8,388,608 bits. In decimal, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes.
