What this tool does
Different hash algorithms produce outputs of characteristic lengths and formats. This identifier inspects your input — its length, whether it's hexadecimal, and any prefix — and lists the algorithms that match. It's a quick way to guess what produced an unknown hash.
Common signatures
- 32 hex chars → MD5 or NTLM.
- 40 hex chars → SHA-1.
- 64 hex chars → SHA-256.
- 128 hex chars → SHA-512.
- Starts with
$2a$/$2b$/$2y$→ bcrypt. - Starts with
$argon2→ Argon2.
Limitations
- This is a best guess from format alone — several algorithms share the same length (for example MD5 and NTLM are both 32 hex characters).
- It cannot reverse a hash or reveal the original input; hashes are one-way.
