What this tool does
YAML and JSON both describe structured data, but YAML is often preferred for configuration files because it is easier to read and supports comments. This tool converts between the two formats so you can reuse data across tools, CI pipelines (like GitHub Actions), Kubernetes manifests and app configs.
Example
The JSON {"server":{"port":8080}} becomes the YAML:
server:
port: 8080
JSON vs. YAML
- JSON — strict, compact, used by most APIs; no comments.
- YAML — indentation-based, human-friendly, supports comments and anchors.
Limitations
- YAML comments are lost when converting to JSON, because JSON has no comment syntax.
- YAML is indentation-sensitive — a misaligned line will cause a parse error, which this tool reports.
